Are you travelling or have you travelled the St. James’ Way in 2025?

The project is looking for people who have been on the St. James’ way to complete a questionnaire with a series of reflective questions in order to explore what pilgrimage feels like.

The project is begin run by Swansea University and in accordance with it Research Ethics Procedures with an Research Ethics Approval Number: 1 2025 12191 12609

You can either complete the questionnaire online or complete a word document and then upload it.

The questions ask about your experience of being on the pilgrimage – what it felt like and what made you feel that way.

There is no word limit, so feel free to write as much as you would like.  You may find that some of your answers to some questions may be similar to others. That’s fine. Just write what you feel answers the question in light of your experience. There are no right or wrong answers.

How much of a physical effort was your pilgrimage?

Did you have a sense of your own body? What made you feel the way you did?

Was there a rhythm to your pilgrimage? What made you feel the way you did?

Did you have a sense that there is something greater than your own life or the community you come from while on your pilgrimage? What experiences gave you the feeling that you had?

On yourpilgrim journey did you feel that you were able to discover some kind of collective knowledge from the past that seems to be absent from modern daily life? What made you feel the way you did?

Did you feel that you were able to leave your daily worries and constraints behind? What made you feel the way you did?

While on your pilgrimage, did you feel that you were living outside of your normal experience? What made you feel the way you did?

Were you able to gather memories along the way that you could bring back when you returned home? If so, what memories did you gather?

Did you feel that in some way you were able to change the pace of life and let go of some aspects of your usual identity while on the pilgrimage? If so, how were you able to do this?

Did you feel as though you were acting like a pilgrim? Perhaps in being able to give up (forgo) personal comforts, the way you treated fellow pilgrims or the clothes you wore. What made you feel the way you did?

Did you feel your pilgrimage was complete when you reached your destination? In what way was it complete or not?

Did you feel that you took elements of your pilgrimage home with you? If so, what?

Did any of the feelings you had on the pilgrimage stay with you? If so, what?
